Annie Powell
TEACHER, COUNCILLOR, MAYOR
Rhondda-born, Annie Powell was a Welsh Communist politician and considered to be the first female Communist Mayor in Britain. First and foremost a teacher, her career spanned 40 years where she was active with the National Union of Teachers. It was whilst teaching during the 1926 General Strike her interest in politics sparked and she served more than twenty years on Rhondda council.
