PHILANTHROPIST, INDUSTRIALIST, TRANSLATOR OF THE MABINOGION

Lincolnshire-born Lady Charlotte Guest was an English aristocrat who published the first translation of Britain’s earliest prose literature, the Mabinogion. Wife of a Welsh ironmaster and owner of Dowlais Iron Company, during her time in Wales she was instrumental in the community. Charlotte pioneered schools for workers, piping in water for their cottages and negotiating strikes. She was a linguist and became a leading figure in the study of Welsh Renaissance literature.
