Frances Hoggan (Formerly Morgan)

FIRST WELSH WOMAN PHYSICIAN, SOCIAL REFORMER, EDUCATION CAMPAIGNER

Born in Brecon into a curate’s family, Frances Hoggan began school at eight years old, and became the first British-trained woman on the General Medical Council’s register 12 years later. Having to constantly defend her place as a woman in her profession, she campaigned rigorously to promote sanitary education, supported suffrage and education for girls in Wales, and in her later years, supported civil rights activism in the US. In 2016 the Learned Society of Wales established the Frances Hoggan Medal as an annual award to recognise the contribution of outstanding women connected with Wales in the areas of science, medicine, engineering, technology or mathematics.
