Kirsty Wade

MIDDLE-DISTANCE RUNNER, THREE TIMES COMMONWEALTH GOLD MEDALLIST

Brought up in Llandrindod Wells, Kirsty Wade is a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist. She won the 800 metre event in Brisbane in 1982, and both the 800 metre and 1500 metre events in Edinburgh in 1986, becoming the first woman ever to achieve that historic double. She also broke British records in the 800m and the mile, remaining the Welsh record holder for both distances, and as of 2015 still ranks second on the UK all-time athlete lists for the 800 and 1500 metre events behind Dame Kelly Holmes. An Olympic Torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics, she now lives in the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, with her husband and three children, where she has been praised for her community sports development work.
