Mary Dillwyn

WALES’S FIRST WOMAN PHOTOGRAPHER

With photography in the family, Mary Dillwyn is considered the earliest female photographer in Wales. Preserved in albums in the National Library of Wales, her photography is revered for its raw insight into the domestic lives of women and children in 19th century Britain. She is credited with taking the first known photograph of a smile and one of a snowman. Upon marriage her interest in photography was lost.
