AMBASSADOR FOR “CHILDREN MATTER” WELSH WOMEN’S AID
Rachel Williams was brought up in Newport, Gwent and was educated at Lliswerry High School. In August 2011, she was working as a hairdresser in a salon in Newport when her former husband entered the shop and shot her with a double-barrelled shotgun. Rachel endured a ten-hour operation to save her left leg. Six weeks after the shooting and two days after she left hospital, her youngest son, Jack, killed himself at the same spot his father had died. Since 2011, she has campaigned rigorously for survivors of domestic abuse to have more input about how services should be organised and what help they should offer. Since 2015 she has also been an Ambassador for the Domestic Abuse Women’s Network (DAWN) and for Welsh Women’s Aid, where she promotes the organisation’s Children Matter programme which aims to provide services to young people affected by domestic abuse.
