Shirley Bassey
SINGER
Born on Bute Street in Tiger Bay, Shirley Veronica Bassey had her first hit, “The Banana Boat Song” in 1957. A year later she became the first Welsh artist to get a number one single with “As I Love You.” Most famed for recording the theme songs for the James Bond franchise, she has performed around the world for royals and dignitaries and raised hundreds of thousands through her charitable work. In 2000, she was awarded a DBE for her services to the performing arts.
